Preparing Your Puppy for Grooming

A cute puppy getting ready for its first groom

A puppy's first grooming experience sets the tone for the rest of their life. At The Fur Salon, we love welcoming new members to the pack and making sure their introduction to the salon is positive, gentle, and fun.

When Should a Puppy Have Their First Groom?

We generally recommend bringing your puppy in for their first "Puppy Package" once they've had all their vaccinations (usually around 12-14 weeks). The goal of early sessions isn't a complex haircut, but rather getting them used to the sights, sounds, and smells of the grooming environment.

Home Preparation Tips

You can do a lot at home to help your puppy feel comfortable with physical handling:

  • Touch Their Paws: Gently handle their feet, ears, and tail daily to desensitize them to being touched in these sensitive areas.
  • Introduce Brushing: Use a soft brush for short sessions, rewarding them with treats and praise.
  • Noise Exposure: Let them hear the sound of a hairdryer or electric toothbrush at a distance to mimic salon noises.
  • Bathtime Basics: A positive experience in the tub at home can make our professional baths much less intimidating.

The Fur Salon Puppy Package

Our dedicated puppy service includes a gentle bath, a light blow-dry on a low setting, a tidy-up of the paws and "hygiene" areas, and a nail trim. This gradual introduction ensures they don't become overwhelmed.
